New Jersey's Newton Medical Center, part of Altantic Health System, has implemented an early warning system to alert caregivers when a patient's health may be declining.

The predictive analytics platform, developed by Charlotte, N.C.-based PeraHealth, is powered by the Rothman Index.

The Rothman Index provides an extra level of support for critical care doctors and nurses who use the graphically displayed 0-100 score to detect patient problems.

The technology is being applied for inpatient cases throughout the 148-bed medical center.

"By the time a patient's vital signs reflect deterioration it may be too late for clinicians to intervene and prevent it," PeraHealth CEO Stephanie Alexander, explained in a statement. "Integrating nursing assessments with vitals and lab data into a single score provides a full picture of patient condition proven to help clinicians intervene early enough to make a difference."

Clinicians use PeraHealth technology to remotely monitor patients across multiple care settings, help determine when to discharge patients, prioritize patient bedside visits, nursing assignments and improve documentation accuracy and timeliness.

It is also employed to maximize capacity management, such as bed management; achieve ICU optimization; and to identify opportunities for palliative care consults.

"The Rothman Index' easy-to-view indicators will allow our nurses and doctors to more quickly assess the progress of a patient's healing and adjust care sooner," Denise Fochesto, chief nursing and operations officer for Newton Medical Center, said in a statement. "This is going to help us stay one step ahead in keeping our patients healthy."
